Mvskoke Law Reporter
The Mvskoke Law Reporter is the first fully indexed and digested comprehensive tribal court reporter. The Mvskoke Law Reporter is an eight volume set, containing the court decisions of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation from 1832 - present. The Reporter will be updated annually with pocket parts.
The Reporter is a valuable resource to attorneys, judges, and historians. The historical volumes contain marriage and probate records, which will also be of interest to geneaologists.
Volume 1 of the Reporter contains a brief history of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, an overview of the tribe’s governmental structure, the district court rules, and the district court decisions from 1979-1994.
Volumes 2 and 3 contain the remainder of the district court decisions from 1995-present.
Volume 4 contains the Supreme Court rules and the Supreme Court decisions from 1979-present.
Volume 5, 6 and 7 contain the decisions issued by the tribal courts from 1832-1906. (The federal government shut down the tribal court from 1906-1979, so there were no opinions during those years). The Muscogee (Creek) Nation court system from 1832-1906 was divided into six districts and a supreme court, and Volumes 5-7 are organized the same way.
Volume 8 contains a variety of indexes and digests to facilitate research into the actual court decisions.
The modern era court decisions, collected in volumes 1-4, are each prefaced with a case synopsis, a list of relevant topics discussed in the opinion, and a list of “research points” extracting the key principles from the opinion.
The historical opinions, collected in volume 5-7, are indexed by topic in volume 8, but do not contain the same prefatory material. The editors opted to keep the format of the historical opinions as close as possible to the original handwritten books.
